Send voicemail via Twitter using PocketsApp

by Michelle Mangen on December 14, 2009

in Twitter

Now you can send private voicemail on Twitter

This is totally awesome! Now you can send a voicemail to a friend on Twitter without even having their phone number.

The video below shows how to leave a voicemail for another Twitter user

Steps:

  • Sign into www.pocketsapp.com
  • Make sure you enter/update your telephone number as that is how they call you in order for you to leave the voicemail for your Twitter friend
  • Enter in the Twitter user name (apparently the @ sign is not necessary)
  • PocketsApp calls you – you record the voicemail
  • PocketsApp then turns around and sends an @ reply to the person you sent the voicemail to

What I think is fun about this is for people who we all know we will never get on Skype and will probably never talk to via cell phone (geographical constraints, etc.) this is a fun, great way for them to be able to hear your voice!

What are your thoughts? Does this redefine or augment social networking?

P.S. This isn’t totally new – apparently it’s been around for a few months now

Thanks for posting this resource! I’m sure this would be a great way to contact people you know on Twitter who haven’t updated their contact information lately too..

Is it US only?

Thanks!

@ FlavioAce – I’m not sure but I would imagine that it’s universal since it’s actually sending the voicemail via the internet. I have a friend in Portugal that I’ve been meaning to try it with but I haven’t yet. If you try it overseas let me know.

FlavioAce – I would imagine it works universally since the voicemail is being sent to you via the internet – hence no phone/long distance charges. I have a friend in Portugal I’ve been meaning to use it with but I haven’t had a chance yet.

This is great!
One thing… How does the twitter user get your voicemail? Do they have to sign in to pocketsapp to listen? Which is to say that they would get a notification to listen to their voicemail, but if they did not want to sign in, they wouldnt have access? The part where you were showing the email notices – was that to tell you that you had a voicemail to listen too? Meaning pocketsapp sends the user an email to alert them (or does it show in twitter feed for that user)?

Sorry if you feel like these questions were answered in the vid – If they were, I didnt get it. Promise I’m not a slow swimmer :)

Thanks!
Justin

Justin – oh no worries on asking all the questions!

PocketsApp sends you a message in the Twitter timeline to let you know you have a message. If you don’t allow PocketsApp the OAuth then you can’t access the voicemail either. They aren’t actually sending it to your phone.

It may have looked like email on my video because I was in Outlook but I was actually in TwInbox (which is a Twitter application that integrates with Outlook). I’m such an Outlook girl! :-)

Justin – no worries on asking the questions!

PocketsApp doesn’t have your phone number to send actual voicemail. They are sending it to you via the internet and then @PocketsApp alerts you via a public tweet that you have a VM waiting. When you click the URL in the message it takes you to Oauth to authorize their app with your Twitter acct. If you don’t allow the OAuth then you won’t get the voicemail.

I apologize if it appeared I had an email alert. I use TwInBox (a twitter application that integrates with Outlook so it probably def appeared that I had an email in the video). I’m a total Outlook girl and Twinbox is one Twitter application that I CAN’T live without!

Sam – you are welcome. The last I knew the application wasn’t working but it may be now. However, that’s what happens on third party applications that are free. Sometimes they vanish or quit working with no warning!

Hmm.. It’s a neat idea but i think, based on your video, that it probably needs more work to get things right. I can see how this type of thing would come in handy though! Thanks for the vid :)

The Apps that are now available really are quite remarkable. If youd ask me if 10 years ago if something like Twitter would be possible, let alone popular and successful I never would have guessed!
