Section Widget WordPress PlugIn Review

Post One of Two

If you live in Appleton, Wisconsin and would like to learn how to build your own WordPress website in just four hours I highly recommend you join us at the Appleton ATW Airport on January 16, 2010.

By far Section Widget has to be close to the top of my favorite WordPress Plugins and made my recent 20 WordPress PlugIns I would die without post.

With this plugin you have the ability to put sidebar items on only specific pages, specific posts OR only on posts in a specific category. Honestly, I think the uses for this are probably limitless.

Check back tomorrow for the video and post on using this plugin with it’s “tabbed” feature.

Have you tried Section Widget or one that is similar? What are your favorite uses for it?

This is a great idea Michelle because it makes your sidebars more focused and therefore more useful to your blog readers. It’s also good for SEO and Google, because it reduces the amount of duplicate content across your site (something that Google really discourages). Thanks for the tip

Dr. Richard – glad you found the post useful! I really do love that plugin – especially for pages where I want it “clean” (like my contact page).

    Hi Michelle,

I can see how this plug in can be very useful. It piqued my attention in your post about 20 WP plug ins and now you give more information about it. Thanks.

The video is great, albeit a bit blurry when enlarged.

Being able to select by which post the widget will be displayed is something that I wished for but had no idea how it could be done.

I will definitely install the section widget either now or after reading your next post with a video on the subject.

Vance – oooohhhh make sure to let me know when your video goes live. For some reason the videos didn’t convert well when I added the opening/closing frames with Windows Movie Maker program. Videos are not my strong suit but I do them with my limited software because I know a lot of people are more visual learners.

That plugin will come in really handy when I start organising my blog, I just got a domain name for it a few days ago ;)

Sarah – good luck with your site! There are some amazing plugins out there that will make the time spent on your WordPress site much more efficient!

Haven’t tried Section Widget before but I tempted to go play with it based on your love for it!

Gabe – be sure to let me know how you like Section Widget. If I had a monetized blog I could totally see even more use for it – for example only having affiliate links/banners show up on posts tagged in a certain category!

Very useful plugin. I have been using it for some time on almost all of my blogs. Its strange that wp doesn’t incorporate similar plugins right out of the box since it is stupid to assume that whatever we put in a sidebar should appear on every page of the site. For example, I have a couple of aff review blogs on a a variety of topics and putting sidebar sitewide will decrease conversions dramatically as opposed to targeting specific pages with particular relevant products.

    Hi Michelle,

Thanks for letting me know about the Section widget. I had never heard of this before, but after watching your video, I think I’ll have to give it a try! I’ve been using a widget called “View Pages” which is similar. It seems to work pretty well but it’s not all that intuitive so I’m excited to try this widget out. Thanks again!

  • http://mot-haravfall.net Lennart@håravfall

Michelle! I’ve used a similar plugin before. I believe it was called Widget Logic or something similar to that. Google it.

It basically does the same thing as the plugin you’re talking about in this post does. It only shows the sidebar widgets on specific pages of your WordPress-based website.

I’ve had to use it twice before.

Once, on a personal blog where I chose to only display the presentation of me and what I did (in my sidebar) on the front page. And the front page only.

The second time a company which did SEO for their clients wanted me to switch places for the link I had placed to them in my sidebar.

When I first placed the link to their website, it was shown on all over my place. Sitewide, as it’s called.

What they wanted was a link displaying on my front page. And on my front page only. Not on all my pages.

So I basically told the plugin to only show the link to their website on my front page, and miracilouslly — it did! So now the link is only being displayed on the front page.

Those were my two uses of that plugin, or a plugin similar to that. Hope you get what I mean and that everything’s going great for you.

    /Lennart.
