4 Reasons: Twitter’s new ReTweet Feature SUCKS!

The new Twitter ReTweet feature SUCKS…and here’s why

I really wanted to use the word “hate” but my dad would never allow us to say that word (and if we did, boy oh boy!) so I’ve resigned myself to a slightly less mean word. I know, you don’t normally hear anything like this out of my mouth. But this time, I really think it fits. If I’ve offended you…stop. Watch the video. Read the rest of the post and chime in with your comment.

Now for my opinionated post….

Four Reasons Why Twitter’s New ReTweet Feature Sucks:

  1. Although very quick and easy to do (absolutely great in concept, aren’t we all looking for ways to save time on Twitter?) the RT no longer shows up as a @ mention
  2. I’m one of those people who has to thank each and every person who ReTweets me (I’m all about showing appreciation and gratitude for what others do for me) with the ReTweets no longer showing in the traditional format of: RT @ShellyKramer Social Media Brand Engagement Report – ENGAGEMENT http://ff.im/-dtfwf and not seeing it in my mentions now all of the sudden I’m not thanking people who are taking their time to share my tweets with their followers.
  3. There is, however, a place to find them….on the web interface and to my knowledge there is no software/application for Twitter that shows them other than the web.
  4. Once on the web interface there is no easy way to thank the person who did the RT – it is much more time consuming to thank the person doing the ReTweet

Although very easy and quick to ReTweet using the new feature…..for me it sucks. Why? Mainly because I use TwInbox and TweetMiner and if I don’t see the RT @mmangen – it’s likely I’ll never send a “Thank You”.

That being said…if you’ve ReTweeted me with the new feature and I haven’t thanked you….that’s why. I do, as always totally appreciate your ReTweets.

The better option outlined in the video (IMHO) is with the FireFox Add-On:

  • Download this FireFox Add-On (re-start your browser after installation and before installing the next option)
  • Download this ReTweet Script
  • Now you have a one-click RT option that adds in the traditional “RT @stacykinney 6 essential criteria used to evaluate a company, product and comp plan http://bit.ly/34B0Iv” that we are all accustomed to seeing!

What are your thoughts on Twitter’s new ReTweet button? Like It or Hate It?

My daddy the Navy Mechanic would be so upset with my language, but I hate it. It’s too difficult to manipulate, but I’d actually gotten somewhat used to it; accepted it. Now, I realized I’ve missed some retweets because of it! Thanks for the info and downloads :)

Anita – so apparently I do not have the only dad would would be upset with the “hate” word! He’d probably be glad to know that. I am like that with my son too. Guess it is from all my years of conditioning with it.

You are most welcome for the info!

I already use both of these add-on’s – and yes, they are awesome! …I just wish Firefox would develop enhanced features to be used with lists! All to often I want to Re-Tweet directly from them. Any Suggestions?

Kenda – ohhhhhhhhh I never thought of that…it would be nice if there were a RT feature/option for use with lists. If I happen to run across anything I will let you know. It never crossed my mind before.

The way RTs are handled now is not perfect, but it’s better that it was before. It is true, however, that it’s easier to miss some retweets and therefore impossible to thank the person for retweeting. The idea behind this system is good, but it needs better implementation.

Marko – I agree – the idea behind it was great, just not entirely the “best” possible system.

I actually use Tweetdeck and I find it makes thanking people so much easier and I can thank multiple people all with one tweet, and each person is added with a click of the mouse.

As for suck and hate, I reckon suck sounds so much better. ;)

LOL – yes, suck is much better work than hate! I used to use TweetDeck (and miss it) – for some reason ever since I had to wipe my hard drive I absolutely cannot get TweetDeck to re-install. Having the ability to thank multiple at one time (as TweetDeck does) is a feature I would love to see TwInbox come out with.

Thank you for letting us know that we won’t see those RTs. I was not aware of that. An easy way to find anything that includes your Twitter username is to search for it without the @ symbol. I keep that saved so I can quickly see who is talking to me.

There is another really big reason why Twitter’s RT function is not a good way to retweet and that is that it often truncates (cuts off) Twitter IDs and shared urls so the links are no good any more.

The RT function in the free MrTweet Firefox addon is much better. I temporarily disabled it because of FireFox issues but I really like other features it has.

I also recommend CoTweet as an online way to more effectively manage Twitter accounts including multiple Twitter accounts. It makes it easy to update Twitter accounts when you are not signed in or send a Tweet to multiple accounts.

It is also a much faster way to manage DMs which many of us who have large followings at Twitter pretty much ignore unless you send us an @ message first letting us know to expect something there. The DM spam is overwhelming.

I also recommend using Social Too as a fast way to unfollow inactive accounts when you hit the Twitter follower limits and get that message that you can not follow any more people.

I didn’t mean for this to turn into a mini-post but all of these tools save me so much time I wanted to share them with you and your readers.

OH! I almost forget the greatest time saving Twitter app ever: TweepML. You can instantly follow any Twitter lists, build and share lists others can quickly follow, and search for and find lists of Twitter users by subject. Just uncheck any you don’t want to follow and click to follow the rest.

Speaking of lists, this blog is on my dofollow and keywordluv lists. That makes it faster for me to zero in on keeping in touch with the Tweets of just those bloggers on the list. Anyone can follow my lists there and do the same.

Anyone reading this who has a dofollow blog and/or a keywordluv enabled blog can send a Tweet to @GrowMap to get added. Those blogs get more of my time and attention and get shared across Social Media sites far more often.

Gail – like you I am starting to spend more time on blogs that are DoFollow as well as use KeyWord Luv and CommentLuv.

I am so going to have to check out TweepML – I had not heard of that and it sounds really cool.

I so appreciate the time you took to comment here! I will def be back by your blog and I’ve put it on my list of extra special ones to pay attention to! (yes, I had to start a special spreadsheet just for that!)

I’m sure we’re going to be running across each other regularly from now on. Have you seen my DoFollow Tools and Lists? If you haven’t seen what Kikolani offers about dofollow you’ll see descriptions and links there.

I have a great tip about managing Twitter for those who are hitting the follower limits. First use the Social Too unfollow option to free up room and then use TweepML lists to follow others in your niche. Then don’t use the unfollow option until any you recently followed have time to reciprocate.

Gail – I am totally going to check out your DoFollow Tools and Lists that you linked to. I don’t think I’ve seen what Kikolani though I’ve been to her site and she recently had my post on 20 WordPress Plugins I would die without as part of her Friday Mashup.

I never knew there was a RT problem with twitter, though since I have been tweeting I don’t think I’ve ever used twitter.com to tweet.

I highly recommend HootSuite. It’s a web based application and sounds (from what I’ve read) a lot like what Gail has recommended to. I think in this day and age there are a lot of apps out there doing a lot of the same thing. I just posted why I like HootSuite if you want to see some of the features I like.

As for tweetdeck not reinstalling, more than likely (cause I had that issue to – way back when) it’s a permission setting on your computer. If you are not a super user than Adobe Air won’t install. If you are logged in as a super user, double check the security settings on all the folders from the top down to the install folder. If even 1 of those folder/subfolders don’t have the correct permission settings it will fail thhe Adobe Air install.

Look forward to following you in the future.

CJ:

I’ve never tried HootSuite – was never a fan of how their shortened tweets show how many days ago. But I have heard good things about it from many, including you.

I did manage to get TweetDeck to reinstall with the help of my friend, @TommyTRC. Apparently there was an install file that was hung up in the system. Once he deleted that out it re-installed lickety split. :-)

I use a bunch of different programs and do use the web interface for Twitter about 60% of the time (because of specifically going to a person’s page to see what is there that I can RT).

That is one feature about TweetDeck that I just love and hope that TwInbox adds it soon as that is one of my preferred applications.
